Microsoft Irda Infrared Driver
Applies to: Toshiba laptop computers (Libretto 100CT, Satellite 3xx series including 300/305, 310/315, 320/325, 330/335, Satellite 2505, 4000 series, Satellite Pro 490/490X, Portege 320, 7000/7010 series, Tecra 550, 750, 780, Tecra 8000 series or newer.)These units are equipped with a PCI-based fast IrDA port which cannot be configured to print via the IrDA port, or transfer data via the IrDA port using anything other than IntelliSync software.
This is because there is no native driver support for this type of device under Windows 95. This problem does not apply to Windows 98 which includes native PCI IrDA support within the OS.
Toshiba has developed a PCI IrDA driver to support IrDA data transferring, IrDA networking and IrDA printing for Windows 95. Download IRPCI95.EXE (V 1.0, 6-2-98) from the Toshiba Web Site.
Part One: Driver Installation
Usb To Infrared Irda Adapter
- Download IRPCI95.EXE.
- Extract files to the computer. (Default directory is C:IR.W95)
- From C:IR.W95, execute file TOSIR.EXE to begin installation.
- Click NEXT to continues.
- From SELECT NOT USED COM menu, select a COM port that is currently NOT being used by computer (COM3 port is recommended) and click NEXT to continue. This technote will assume that COM3 port is chosen for the IrDA port.
- Click YES to finish installation. System reboots.
After the driver is installed, there will be a new entry 'Infrared (COM3)' under Control Panel/System Properties/Device Manager/Ports section.
Part Two: Adding IrDA printer and serial port
- Go to Control Panel, double click 'Add New Hardware.'
- From ADD NEW HARDWARE WIZARD menu, click NEXT to continue.
- Select NO for not searching for new hardware, click NEXT to continue.
- Select Infrared as Hardware Type, click NEXT to continue.
- Click NEXT to continue.
- Select Manufacturer/STANDARD INFRARED DEVICES and Model/BUILT-IN INFRARED PORT ON LAPTOP AND DESKTOP.
- Click NEXT to continue.
- Select Toshiba IR (COM3) port, click NEXT to continue.
- Select USE DEFAULT PORTS, click NEXT to continue.
- Click FINISH to continue.
- System will add the following devices in Control Panel/System Properties/Device Manager
INFRARED section
---------- Built-in Infrared port on Laptop or Desktop
PORTS section
---------- INFRARED SERIAL (COM) CONNECTIONS PORT
---------- INFRARED PRINTING (LPT) PORT
How do i scroll for screen shot on mac. Part Three: Enabling the IrDA port
- Go to Control Panel and double click Infrared Icon
- Microsoft Infrared Monitor dialog box comes up and shows IrDA port status. If there is another IrDA device within range, its information will be displayed in this dialog box.
- Click OPTION tab, check ENABLE INFRARED COMMUNICATION PORT ON COM3 box if it is not already. Below this checkbox, Infrared Monitor will display the following message:
- Click OK to finish.
PROVIDING APPLICATION SUPPORT ON COM4 AND LPT3
This means COM4 and LPT3 ports should be selected when trying to do data transfer and/or printing via Infrared port. (Port information may change if a different COM port is selected in Part 1 step 5.)
Configuring the IrDA port for data transfer
The IrDA port can be used to transfer data between two computers. Make sure both computers are equipped with IrDA port that supports the same IrDA spec.(4Mb vs. Vpn 360 for mac. 1Mb.) To configure IrDA for data transfer:
- Install PCI IrDA driver first by following steps above.
- Enable IrDA port.
- Open data transfer application (such as LapLink for Windows 95) that supports IrDA port
- Select to use COM4(see Part 3) .
- Chose proper transfer speed
- Begin data transfer.
Configuring the IrDA port for Networking
The IrDA port can also be configured to support networking via Infrared light instead of cables (sort of wireless networking.) To connect to a network using IrDA port, you will need an IrDA network adapter. One example is JetEYE NetPlus by Extended Systems. P/N ESI-9910 800-235-7576 (in U.S. & Canada)
- Install PCI IrDA driver first by following steps above.
- Enable IrDA port.
- Connect IrDA network adapter (JetEye NetPlus) to the network drop, then position IrDA receiver (on JetEye, there is a IrDA receiver attached to the NetPlus via a serial port cable. JetEye IrDA receiver should glow red when it sees another IrDA device in range) directly to the IrDA port on the computer itself.
- System will detect IrDA adapter and install the MS LAN driver under Device manager / Network Adapter.
- Go to Control Panel/Network and install appropriate network clients and protocols (to be attached to the MS LAN DRIVER.)
Configuring IrDA port for printing
- Go to My Computer.
- Double click Printer icon.
- Double click ADD PRINTER.
- Select Printer manufacturer and Printer model.
- From Available Ports list, select 'LPT3: INFRARED PRINTING (LPT) PORT.'
- Click NEXT to finish installation.
Consult printer manufacturer if special printer driver is required.
Known Issues
Under Control Panel/System Properties/Device Manager, there will still be a 'PCI communication Device' listed. This can not be removed under Windows 95. However, the PCI IrDA driver will Still support IrDA data transfer, IrDA networking and IrDA printing.
Microsoft IrDA driver 2.0
Toshiba IrDA driver is equivalent to Microsoft IrDA driver 2.0. It is not necessary to reinstall Microsoft driver. However, if a customer wishes to use driver from Microsoft (W95ir.exe.) Be sure to skip Step Two above.
IntelliSync 97 V1.00
If your system is bundled with IntelliSync 97 V1.00 software, you may receive an error message when starting IntelliSync 97 AFTER Toshiba PCI IrDA driver has been installed:
'Some program are using an Infrared device. If you turn off infrared communication now, your program may become unstable. Close these programs before turning off Infrared communication.'
This is because Intellisync 97 needs to use its own IrDA COM port driver for data transfer. To workaround this problem, temporarily disable the Toshiba PCI IrDA driver:
- Close the IntelliSync 97 software.
- Go to Control Panel, double click Infrared Icon to start Infrared Monitor.
- Go to OPTION tab, uncheck ENABLE INFRARED COMMUNICATION PORT ON COM3 box if it is already checked.
- Click APPLY or OK for change to take effect.
- Launch IntelliSync 97.
- When finished, close IntelliSync 97 and reenable Toshiba PCI IR driver.
To reenable Toshiba PCI IR driver for other purposes such as printing or IrDA networking, follow Part Three of the steps above.
